Why we named it Astré?

Why we named it Astré?

Astré is derived from the French word astre, meaning a celestial body or star.

Founder M. Hashir Mughal chose the name for its connection to the simplicity of a star. Against a vast sky, a star can appear as a small point of light, defined by a simple form rather than elaborate detail.

That quality of simplicity became relevant to the visual direction of the brand.

The French Connection

French design has a long association with minimalism, proportion, clean forms, and restraint. These qualities informed the Western side of Astré's visual language.

The Japanese Influence

Alongside Western minimalism, Astré draws heavily from Japanese art and visual culture.

Japanese design offers a different vocabulary: symbolism, traditional motifs, Kanji, composition, craftsmanship, and meaning expressed through visual form.

This became the basis for the combination at the centre of Astré's design approach:

Western minimalism and Japanese artistry.

The contrast between the two provides a broad visual language for the brand, from the simplicity of a single Kanji character to the detailed symbolism found in Japanese traditional imagery.

Why Astré?

The name brings the two ideas together in a simple way.

Astre refers to the stars and comes from French, connecting the name to the Western side of the brand's influences. Japanese artistry provides the cultural and visual reference behind much of the design.

The result is a name with a straightforward meaning and a clear connection to the two design traditions that informed its creation.
